Discover The Story In Film And On TV

Don Quijote de la Mancha (1979, Spanish): a now classic animated series, one of the top 100 programs of all time on Spanish television. Click on the image to view the famous introductory sequence. Other notable excerpts:

Man of La Mancha (1972, English): The story of Cervantes told through the trials in his book or the book's story told through the trial of Cervantes? You decide. See Peter O'Toole as Don Quixote, and Sophia Loren as Dulcinea in this wonderful adaptation of the Tony-award winning musical. Click on the image to view the full film. Don Quijote (2000, English): A decent adaptation of the novel featuring John Lithgow as Don Quijote, Bob Hoskins as Sancho Panza, and Vanessa Williams as Dulcinea. In an attempt to be true to origins, even "Quijote" is spelled according to the contemporary Spanish norm. Click on the image to access the movie.

Don Quijote (Documentary, Spanish): Excellent introduction and interpretation of the novel and its context, featuring Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes. Famous scenes are re-enacted and analyzed. The episode with the Duchess is highlighted as the breaking point of the noble illusion, and the intrusion of a harsh, cruel reality.

Wishbone: The Impawssible Dream (1995, English): A silly, but entertaining introduction to the story of Don Quixote through the eyes of a dog. A flashback to the 1990s, and an encounter with a classic novel. Click on the image to view.
